As a tenant you need a housing permit if you want to rent social housing in Amsterdam with a rental price (the basic rent payable each month) up to € 763,47 per month. Or if you want to rent a regulated mediocre rental house up to €1,068.83. The housing permit is tied to the address and to the occupant(s) living there. It is therefore not transferable.

As a tenant you can get a housing permit if you meet these conditions:
Income limit for private social rental housing
For a private rental home with a bare rent up to €763.47, the combined income of your household must not exceed €47,543-.
Income limit for regulated medium-priced rental housing
For a mediocre rental home with a bare rent up to €1,068.83, your household's combined income may not exceed €64,407 (amount 2022).
Application
The housing permit itself must be applied for through this website. The following information must be provided:
The owner must give permission for occupancy. We will attach this form to the rental agreement. It is important to provide it while applying for the housing permit.
If the application is complete, the Housing Department will decide within 8 weeks whether to grant you the housing permit. You will receive the permit from the Housing Department. The housing permit is only valid after you are registered at the address. You must do this within 4 weeks of the completion of your home. Otherwise, the permit will expire.
*The cost for applying for a housing permit is €60.90. These costs are at the expense of applications and can be paid via iDeal while completing the application.
